Urban Decay: Selected Photographs by Joel Bull
Urban Decay contains 150 photographs of Los Angeles and the surrounding areas taken from 2020 through 2024. The pandemic wreaked havoc on our community and there was no shortage of material to point a camera at and click the shutter. These photographs contain the decay from the pandemic, the struggle of the streets during and after, and the lawlessness that ensued once felonies were reduced to misdemeanors.

“We live here and yet our focus is elsewhere. The horizon of our gaze is a step above the misery and the destruction, the pain and the sorrow. At times we can taste it, when the foul breath of humanity creeps down our rivers— the Los Angeles, San Gabriel, Santa Ana— names conjuring pride and beauty, but delivering a chemical green wandering malaise of mortality as they trickle in their beds to the sea. Joel forces us to look— in color or black and white, in loss, or in a lingering line of hope. He forces us to see our neighbors— ourselves, and to look below the horizon we placed as protection from those things that we can’t comprehend. Maybe mankind is not destined for the stars. Joel Bull makes us wonder.”
-Jack Grisham (T.S.O.L., Author, Film Director)
“Joel’s photographs are a vivid and authentic view into the overlooked parts of Los Angeles that only a born and raised Angelino knows where to find. His work brings you out of your front door and into the vibrant neighborhoods of L.A. with his eye for what needs to be seen.”
-Suitcase Joe
“There is a connection to his subjects that speaks a sense of true emotion.”
-Merrick Morton
